Personal Care

Help with washing, dressing, grooming and the daily routine, with patience and real respect for privacy.

A caregiver kneels on the floor to help a seated elderly person put on their shoes.

The first time a parent needs help in the shower, everybody feels it. Adult children step in because there is nobody else, and something shifts in the relationship that neither side asked for. More often, the struggling happens quietly: showers skipped because the bathroom feels dangerous, the same clothes worn three days running, hair that has not been washed properly in a fortnight, and a firm insistence that everything is fine.

Finding private pay home care and nursing care services that meet your loved one's needs can be challenging. At Clair's Home Care Services, we create personalized care plans to help elderly clients, or individuals of any age, stay independent, active and fulfilled. Experience Happier Aging® with care that fits your loved one's needs.

Day to day, personal care follows your loved one's routine rather than ours. The caregiver learns the order things have always been done in: the radio on first, tea before the shower, the good towel, the left leg into the trouser first. They work at your loved one's pace, ask before every step, keep the door closed and keep them covered, and let them do everything they can still manage on their own. That last part matters more than it sounds, because independence that is used tends to last longer than independence that is taken over.

The objection that holds most families back is the certainty that a parent will simply refuse. That reaction is normal, and it is rarely permanent. What works is starting small and starting with something practical rather than personal: a caregiver who comes to help with breakfast, the laundry and a walk, and only later with the shower, once she is a familiar face rather than a stranger with a plan. The match matters too, which is why we take time over personality and interests. Care is private pay and the hours are yours to set, so you can begin with two visits a week and build from there. The consultation is free and carries no obligation.

Personal care that goes above and beyond

We know life is easier when you have a caring friend and personal assistant by your side. Our personal care is here to support you with daily tasks, always delivered with a smile, respect, and a commitment to maintaining your dignity. Your caregiver is ready to help with:

  • Personal hygiene tasks like oral care, shaving and grooming.
  • Medication reminders to keep you on track.
  • Daily activities, while honouring your routines and preferences.

We understand that receiving help with personal matters can feel sensitive. That is why we go the extra mile to match you with a caregiver who shares your interests and makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Our goal is to help you maintain your lifestyle with ease and peace of mind, offering personalized care that is as pleasant and enjoyable as it is helpful.

What a morning visit usually includes

Every plan is different, but a first visit of the day commonly covers:

  • Help getting out of bed safely, including transfers with a frame, a belt or a hoist where one is in use.
  • A shower, a bath or a full wash at the basin, whichever is safest and preferred that day.
  • Skin checked while washing, so redness, dryness or a new sore is noticed early rather than found later.
  • Oral care, shaving, hair, and grooming that makes someone feel like themselves rather than like a patient.
  • Dressing in clothes they chose, with fastenings adapted where fingers no longer cooperate.
  • Toileting and continence care, handled discreetly and without commentary.
  • Breakfast made and eaten, a drink left within reach, and medication reminders at the right time.
  • A quick tidy of the bathroom and bedroom, so the room they spend the day in is calm.

Signs it is time to arrange personal care

Most families notice several of these before anyone says anything out loud:

  • The bath or shower is being avoided, often because of a fear of falling rather than a lack of will.
  • Clothes are worn repeatedly, or laundry is piling up unwashed.
  • Hair, nails, shaving or oral care have visibly slipped.
  • Unexplained bruises, or furniture being used to get from room to room.
  • Weight loss, skipped meals, or a fridge with food past its date.
  • A recent illness, surgery or hospital stay that has left less strength than before.
  • The family member who has been helping is exhausted, or the relationship is starting to strain.

How we protect privacy and dignity

  • Consent first, every time, and an explanation of what is about to happen before it happens.
  • Doors closed, curtains drawn, and the body kept covered except for the part being washed.
  • The same caregiver wherever the schedule allows, so intimate care is never given by a stranger.
  • Work at your loved one's pace, with nothing rushed for the sake of the clock.
  • Whatever they can do themselves, they do themselves, with the caregiver supporting rather than taking over.
  • Conversation kept normal and adult throughout, because tone is what makes the difference between being helped and being handled.
