Transportation & Errands

Door to door rides to appointments and outings, the weekly shop done and the bags put away.

A caregiver holding a shopping bag helps a woman step out of a car.

Giving up driving changes everything about a week. On island, without a car, the pharmacy, the market, the clinic and church all move out of reach at the same time, and the person it happens to rarely complains about it. They say do not worry about it, they will go another day, and then they go without. Meanwhile an adult child becomes the unofficial taxi service on top of a full time job, and both sides start feeling guilty about a problem neither of them created.

We take that off the calendar. A caregiver arrives in good time, helps your loved one get ready and out of the house, and handles the whole trip from the front door to the front door. That includes the parts that are actually difficult: the step down from the porch, the seatbelt, getting in and out of the car, the walking frame stowed and brought back out, the queue at the counter, and the bags at the other end. Nothing is rushed, because rushing is how falls happen.

How the errand runs is your choice. Some clients want to come along and pick their own produce, because that hour out of the house is the point. Others want the list handled while they stay comfortable at home, with the shopping put away in the right cupboards afterwards. Both work. Receipts and change are accounted for every time, and preferred shops, brands and the loyalty card all end up in the care plan so nobody has to be reminded. Errands are usually folded into a visit you have already booked, so the pharmacy run does not become a separate trip.

One thing worth being clear about: this service covers the driving, the accompanying and the practical help. If you want a nurse in the consultation room translating what the doctor says and writing it up for the family, that is our medical appointments service, and the two are often booked together for the same trip.

Trips and errands we cover

  • Doctor, dentist, optician, physiotherapy and specialist appointments.
  • Hospital visits, day procedures and follow up reviews.
  • Grocery shopping, either together or from your list.
  • Pharmacy pickups and prescription collections.
  • Bank, post office and other administrative errands.
  • Church, the salon or barber, social visits and family gatherings.
  • Trips out with no purpose beyond fresh air and a change of scene.

Getting in and out safely

The risky part of an outing is rarely the journey. It is the six steps either side of the car.

  • Help getting ready, including shoes, a hat, sunglasses and water for the heat.
  • A steady arm from the door to the vehicle, taken at your loved one's pace.
  • Support with transfers into and out of the car, including from a wheelchair.
  • Walking frames, sticks and wheelchairs stowed and brought back out at each stop.
  • Seatbelt fastened and comfortable, and the air conditioning set the way they like it.
  • Accompaniment inside, so nobody is left standing in a queue or crossing a car park alone.

What to have ready

  • The shopping list, plus any preferred shops, brands or sizes.
  • The payment arrangement you want to use, and a loyalty card if there is one.
  • A cool bag for frozen or chilled items, which matters on a warm day.
  • Appointment letters, referral notes or anything the clinic asks you to bring.
  • Prescription details and the pharmacy you use.
  • A note of anything that makes travel harder, such as a bad hip, motion sickness or a preferred side to get out on.
